เราอยากหาสิ่งเหล่านี้ แต่รู้ว่าน่าจะยาก เพราะการเข้าไปจีนไม่ง่าย เราต้องเริ่มต้นใหม่ แต่สิ่งที่อาจทำได้คือเขียนเป็นแนวทางไว้ว่าเราคิดอย่างไร เผื่อมีใครสนใจในอนาคต ก็อาจมีลายแทงที่เขาทำต่อได้ เราก็ต้องคิดวิธีหาคำตอบในการเชื่อมโยง ก็คุยกับนักชาติพันธุ์ชาวอาข่า ซึ่งเป็นอาจารย์อยู่มหาวิทยาลัยชนกลุ่มน้อยที่ยูนนาน เราตั้งคำถามกับเขาว่าเป็นไปได้ไหมที่คุณจะศึกษาวัฒนธรรมจริงๆ ที่เป็นกุญแจในการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ได้ ยกตัวอย่างเวลานักโบราณคดีหากุญแจเพื่อตรวจสอบข้อมูล เรามักใช้ลักษณะทางวัฒนธรรมที่ยังดำรงอยู่เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นสมมติก่อน เพื่อให้เรามีหลักในการศึกษาก่อน เมื่อเราได้ข้อมูลแล้วจึงมาเปรียบเทียบ อธิบายความแตกต่างหรือเหมือน เราไม่ได้แช่แข็งวัฒนธรรม แต่ต้องหาเครื่องมือสำหรับการทำงาน เช่น แบบแผน ความเชื่อ ความตาย ยกตัวอย่างคนไทยไปอยู่ในอเมริกา อาจยังมีหิ้งพระอยู่ แม้จะอยู่ในบ้านเรือนแบบอเมริกา เป็นต้น ในขณะเดียวกันมีอีกวิชาหนึ่งที่โลกวิชาการปัจจุบันเริ่มพูดกันเยอะมากเลย คือการใช้มรดกวัฒนธรรม เขามองว่ามรดกวัฒนธรรมจัดการได้ เช่น จัดการให้เป็นงานเชิงสร้างสรรค์ในเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ แนวคิดซอฟต์พาวเวอร์ก็คล้ายๆ กัน คือคิดว่าวัฒนธรรมจัดการได้ ซึ่งมีหลายแบบ แบบหนึ่งคือจัดการแบบอนุรักษ์ไว้ให้ดำรงอยู่เหมือนเดิม ส่วนจัดการอีกแบบคือพัฒนาออกมาเป็นการออกแบบ เป็นงานศิลปะ เราแน่ใจได้ว่าอย่างไรว่า ‘วัฒนธรรม’ จัดการได้? ยกตัวอย่างตัวเองใช้ศิลปะในการทำความเข้าใจประวัติศาสตร์ นักโบราณคดีหลายคนเชื่อว่าเราอ่านความคิดมนุษย์ไม่ได้ ความคิดเป็นสิ่งที่จับต้องไม่ได้ แต่ถ้าเราอยากรู้ เราก็อาจต้องประเมินจากสิ่งที่เห็น เช่น เราสันนิษฐานว่าการสร้างโลงไม้ที่เพิงผาบ้านไร่ ช่างต้องมีความเป็นศิลปินด้วยจึงจะเลือกพื้นที่ตรงนั้นให้เป็นพื้นที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ได้ เพราะงานคราฟต์ที่เราเห็น เขาต้องบรรจงสร้างขึ้นมา ต้องเป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่สำคัญของกลุ่มและน่าจะเป็นกลุ่มพิเศษด้วย อันนี้ถึงได้รู้สึกว่าเราพอใจในแง่ของวิธีคิด แต่มาจากสองส่วน ทั้งส่วนที่มีแนวคิดทฤษฎี ขณะเดียวกันก็ต้องปฏิบัติให้เยอะ แล้วเราก็ตรวจสอบตัวเราเองกลับไปกลับมา รวมทั้งการคิดค้นระเบียบวิธีในการทำงานของเราเอง

เสร็จจากตรงนั้น เราใช้เวลาอีกสามปีเต็มๆ นั่งวิเคราะห์โบราณวัตถุ ทำงานแบบโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม ผู้ช่วยนักวิจัยต้องสลับกะดึกกับกะเช้า วนไปอย่างนี้ เพื่อวิเคราะห์จำนวนของที่รวมกันเป็นล้านชิ้นให้เสร็จ ทั้งกระดูกคน เครื่องมือหิน และกระดูกสัตว์ ตอนแรกก็ไม่รู้อะไร แต่เนื่องจากเคยสำรวจขุดค้นถ้ำที่เมืองกาญจน์มาก่อน เราก็พอมองออกว่าจะค้นหาอะไร พอมาสำรวจที่แม่ฮ่องสอนก็พบว่ามีร่องรอยที่น่าสนใจอยู่เยอะแยะเลยทั้งในถ้ำและนอกถ้ำ เราก็คิดว่าต้องทำงานโบราณคดีต่อแล้วละ สำรวจก่อนหนึ่งปีว่ารอบๆ นี้มีอะไร แล้วค่อยประเมินว่าตรงไหนมีความเป็นไปได้ว่าจะขุดค้นเจออะไร ตอนนั้นเราทำงานขุดค้นที่ปางมะผ้ามาได้หลายปีแล้ว มีทีมวิจัยอีกชุดที่ไปเก็บตัวอย่างในถ้ำ แล้วไม่ได้บอกชาวบ้านก่อน ชาวบ้านก็ล้อมวงเลย ไม่ให้เราไปไหน ตอนนั้นต้องขอขมากับพี่น้องชาติพันธุ์เลยว่าโทษของเราเป็นโทษสูงสุด เหมือนโทษยาเสพติดเลย ตัวเองเป็นหัวหน้าโครงการก็ต้องออกมายอมรับ บอกว่าเราไม่ได้ตั้งใจเลย พอเห็นไม่มีคนอยู่ ทีมงานของเราเลยเดินเข้าไป แต่ไม่ได้ตั้งใจไม่เคารพ สุดท้ายชาวบ้านก็เข้าใจ ตรงจุดนั้นแหละที่ทำให้เราตั้งหลักทำงานกับชุมชนมากขึ้น จุดพลิกผันที่ทำให้ต้องทำงานกับชุมชนมากขึ้นคือตอนที่นักวิจัยในทีมโดนชาวบ้านไล่ ทำให้รู้สึกว่าเราจะเป็นพวกนักโบราณคดีที่มุดหัวลงดินเพื่อขุดค้นอย่างเดียวไม่ได้ แต่เราต้องคุยและรู้จักกับชาวบ้านมากขึ้น เราไม่สามารถถือตัวว่ามีความรู้เรื่องโบราณคดีแล้วบอกว่าตรงนั้นตรงนี้มีอะไรบ้าง เราจำเป็นต้องเป็นนักเรียนแล้ว ต้องรู้ประวัติความเป็นมาและวัฒนธรรมของเขา แล้วก็ค่อยๆ เชื่อมเรื่องของเราไปสู่ชีวิตของเขาในเชิงเปรียบเทียบ อำเภอปางมะผ้าแทบไม่มีพื้นที่ราบให้มองไกลได้สุดสายตา ภูมิประเทศส่วนมากเป็นหุบเขาลึกอันสลับซับซ้อน แต่ด้วยสภาพแวดล้อมเช่นนี้ทำให้ปางมะผ้าดำรงความอุดมสมบูรณ์ทางธรรมชาติไว้ได้อย่างดี ซึ่งเหมาะอย่างยิ่งที่จะใช้เปรียบเทียบกับสภาพแวดล้อมในอดีต พื้นที่แห่งนี้ถูกเปรียบเทียบเป็น ‘ห้องปฏิบัติการทางธรรมชาติ’ ที่โอบรับความหลากหลายทั้งเรื่องทางกายภาพ ชีวภาพ และวัฒนธรรม
